Super Bowl LIV ends with thrilling historic milestone, 31-20 victory for the Chiefs

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Before the start of the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami, the San Francisco Forty-Niners were not the favored team. By Las Vegas measurements, they were 1.5 point under dogs despite their dominance during the 2019-20 season. For the Chiefs, it was their first time in the big game since 1970, when they won their only previous NFL title.

The Forty-Niners killer defense flipped the script and showed its teeth early on - stifling the Kansas City offense. Going into the half, San Francisco looked ready to take home the Lombardi trophy and held Kansas City to just ten points.

AT THE HALF:

49ers 10

Chiefs 10

The second half was a different story. Patrick Mahomes led Kansas City to three touchdowns in the final 6:13, and the Chiefs overcame a double-digit deficit for the third postseason game in a row to beat San Francisco on Sunday.

The Chiefs were playing from behind as the clock ticked away in the second half. The 20-10 lead looked to be too large to overcome. Facing a third and 15 situation, Mahomes threw deep to Tyreek Hill for a 44-yards completion. Four plays the Chiefs were in the end zone again as they chipped away at the lead.

Mahomes then connected with Sammy Watkins for a 38-yarder that set up a 5-yard go-ahead touchdown reception by Damien Williams. Kansas City led 24-20 with 2:44 to go.

The 49ers, who were originally slated as the under dog, began to look like one. They saw their hopes start to fizzle further when Jimmy Garoppolo was sacked by Frank Clark on fourth down. On the next series of the Chiefs, Williams' followed with a 38-yard touchdown run to extend the lead for Kansas City and also became the first player in Super Bowl history to score multiple touchdowns in the last five minutes of a game.

The 49ers fell short in their quest for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl title, even though they dominated for most of the game. Garoppolo threw to eight receivers to finish 20 for 31 with 219 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Even President Trump felt the excitement of Super Bowl Sunday and congratulated the Chiefs via Twitter. The post, however, drew scrutiny on Twitter after he mistakenly congratulated the "Great State of Kansas". The only problem with the tweet is the fact that the Chiefs' stadium is located in Kansas City, Mo. The president removed the tweet and re-posted a corrected version but not before the Twitter trollers caught wind of the initial post. So it appeared that the president was just having a typical day in regards to Twitter posts.

FINAL:

49ers 20

Chiefs 31

“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game and a fantastic comeback under immense pressure,” the corrected tweet reads. “We are proud of you and the Great State of Missouri. You are true Champions!”

Nonetheless, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid earned his 222nd career victory, and first in a Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes was the difference maker as he walked into history. He finished with 286 yards passing, 29 yards rushing, three total touchdowns and two interceptions. Mahomes, who was also named Super Bowl MVP, became the first quarterback in NFL history to win three straight games by double digits after trailing by double digits.

And yes - Mahomes is going to Disney World.
