Big South Conference announces Men's hoops players of the week


CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the following statement released by the conference, the Big South has named Phlandrous Fleming Jr. of Charleston Southern this week's player of the week.


Charleston Southern junior guard Phlandrous Fleming Jr. (Athens, Ga.) has been named the Big South Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Winthrop redshirt-freshman forward D.J. Burns Jr. (Rock Hill, S.C.) is the Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 13-19, it was announced today.


Fleming led the Buccaneers to two Big South road wins with 26.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.0 blocks, while shooting 55.6 percent from the field (20-of-36) and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-14).  He opened with 21 points, seven rebounds and six helpers in the Bucs’ nationally-televised win at Campbell on Jan. 16.  Fleming then scored a career-high 31 points at High Point on Saturday, including 24 in the opening 20 minutes.

Burns scored a career-high 22 points in just 15 minutes of action at Hampton on Jan. 16, along with six rebounds and an assist in just his fifth start of the year.  He was 9-of-12 from the floor ( =75.0 percent) and made all four free throw attempts.

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Travis Anderson (Charleston Southern), John-Michael Wright (High Point) and Tommy Bruner (USC Upstate)
